Orbital Decay and Tidal Disruption of a Star Cluster: Analytical Calculation
نویسندگان
چکیده
The orbital decay and tidal disruption of a star cluster in a galaxy is studied in an analytical manner. Owing to dynamical friction, the star cluster spirals in toward the center of the galaxy. Simultaneously, the galactic tidal field strips stars from the outskirts of the star cluster. Under an assumption that the star cluster undergoes a self-similar evolution, we obtain the condition and timescale for the star cluster to reach the galaxy center before its disruption. The result is used to discuss the fate of so-called intermediate-mass black holes with & 103 M found recently in young star clusters of starburst galaxies and also the mass function of globular clusters in galaxies. Tidal evolution of eccentric orbits in massive binary systems
We study the tidal evolution of a binary system consisting of a 1.4M⊙ compact object in elliptic orbit about a 10M⊙ uniformly rotating main sequence (MS) star for various values of the initial orbital parameters. We apply our previously published results of 2D non-adiabatic calculations of the non-radial gand r-mode oscillations of the uniformly rotating MS star, and include the effects of reso...

متن کاملOrbital Decay of the PSR J0045-7319 Binary System: Age of Radio Pulsar and Initial Spin of Neutron Star
Recent timing observations of PSR J0045-7319 reveal that the neutron star/B star binary orbit is decaying on a time scale of |Porb/Ṗorb| = 0.5 Myr, shorter than the characteristic age (τc = 3 Myr) of the pulsar (Kaspi et al. 1996a). We study mechanisms for the orbital decay. The standard weak friction theory based on static tide requires far too short a viscous time to explain the observed Ṗorb...

Equilibrium uid conngurations for close binary systems can become globally unstable. Instabilities arise from the strong tidal interaction between the two components , which tends to make the eeective two-body potential governing the orbital motion steeper than 1=r. As a result, a circular orbit can become unstable to small radial perturbations. The instability can be either secular or dynamica...
